Q. Where can the public see and/or purchase artworks by Karel Appel?
A. The Foundation does not have a gallery exhibition space. Many of Karel Appel’s works can be seen in museums and galleries worldwide. See also the RELEVANT LINKS and GALLERIES sections of our website.
Q. Can I bring an artwork in my possession to the offices of the Karel Appel Foundation?
A. The Karel Appel Foundation cannot accept artworks for physical examination.
Q. I think I have a work by Karel Appel. Can you authenticate it for me?
A. As of June 2017 the Karel Appel Foundation stopped issuing certificates of authentication altogether.
Q. I think I have a work on paper by Karel Appel. Can you authenticate it for me?
A. As of March 2016 the Karel Appel Foundation no longer issues certificates of authentication for works on paper.
Q. Whom can I contact now that the Karel Appel Foundation no longer issues certificates of authentication for works by Karel Appel.
A. The Karel Appel Foundation cannot assist you in this matter.
Q. I have lost a certificate of authenticity issued by the Foundation. Can the Foundation provide me with a new certificate?
A. Lost certificates will not be re-issued by the Karel Appel Foundation.
Q. When will the oeuvre catalogue on Appel’s work be available?
A. The Karel Appel Foundation is currently conducting research for a catalogue of works by Karel Appel, which is in the process of being published online in successive parts following a reversed chronology. The first volume with works created between 1990-2006 has been published in January 2021. At present the team is researching the following volume with works created between 1980-1989.
At this stage the timing of the publication of subsequent volumes is hard to foresee. Please note however that before publication of the respective volume the Karel Appel Foundation will refrain from giving any opinion or otherwise information on the likeliness of the inclusion of works in the catalogue.
Q: Which categories of works are included in the Catalogue of Works?
A: The Catalogue of Works focuses on Karel Appel’s paintings, object paintings and site-specific works. The definitions of these categories are described in the Notes for Users.
Q: Which categories of works are not included in the Catalogue of Works?
A: Not included in this catalogue are the drawings, prints, multiples, textiles, and theatre props.
Works on paper mounted on canvas are regarded as drawings, and not as paintings. Only drawings which are related to paintings, object-paintings and site-specific works are included in the Catalogue of Works.
Q. I am looking for information about a lithograph by Karel Appel. Can you help me?
A. The Karel Appel Foundation does not give any opinion on lithographs, or other works made in an edition.
Q. Can the Karel Appel Foundation inform me how much a Karel Appel artwork is worth? What are the current selling prices?
A. The Karel Appel Foundation does not appraise Appel’s artworks. If you want a professional appraisal, we suggest that you contact the Appraisals Department of either Christies http://www.christies.com or Sotheby’s Auction Houses. http://www.sothebys.com
Q. Can the Karel Appel Foundation advise me on the conservation of art works?
A. The Karel Appel Foundation does not perform restoration of artworks.
For advise on restoration you can best contact a museum in your country which has work by Karel Appel in its collection. They might be able to refer you to a professional restorer or to help you further with specific information.
